With the family room and bedroom on the opposite side of the house, expanding the wired Ethernet network conventionally would have been labor intensive. My parents' Ethernet network is limited to the home office and a small bedroom directly above it. I recommended that they switch to a wired network connection for a faster and more reliable solution.

Prior to me coming home for Labor Day, they set up an Apple TV on the wireless network. My mom, who has rented Netflix DVDs for a while, wanted to start streaming her favorite shows in the family room and bedroom rather than waiting for disks. As long as your MoCa network doesn't interfere with the existing one, you should be fine.Like many existing homes, my parents' home has a limited wired Ethernet network and a wireless (Wi-Fi) network covering the rest. You need to go Gateway -> eth -> MoCa adapter 1 -> coax -> MoCa adapter 2 -> eth -> AppleTV. They're designed to take a signal from eth and broadcast it over coax. You have to treat them like any other device on your IP network. Pretty sure it works on Comcast.īut the only way to use a new pair of MoCa adapters for a secondary loop is to provide them a connection via Ethernet, not coax. It's definitely a thing on some cable providors' equipment. But I'm not even sure that's possible with Fios. The closest possible thing to what you're doing is to use a single additional MoCa adapter to pick up the network your gateway is already sending out. You're trying to create a new MoCa network by providing a network connection to your new adapters via coax. What you're trying to do isn't possible, I don't think. But you DO have available ethernet ports on your gateway, right?

As a Fios user, you can't go full ethernet unless you deactivate the built-in MoCa network that the gateway is putting out for the tv boxes. I put a splitter before the adapter and connected the STB to straight coax, then i connected the AppleTV to the adapter's Ethernet and its right as rain. the coax OUT on the adapter was if it was the ONLY adapter and it was creating the MOCa network but my gateway was already doing that. The set top box didn't like being connected to the MOCa adapter. but as soon as I try using the AppleTV it cuts out again.ĮDIT: Got it working at last. If I restart it, or even wait a few minutes, the Fios page says active. the AppleTV gets an IP, and if I look at my Fios router page, it says Active. But when I connect my AppleTV4 to the ethernet jack on the MOCa adapter, I have less luck. I got a Motorola MOCa 2 adapter, and I have coax going from the wall to the adapter then on to the cable box.

but I wanted better performance specifically in my office where my PC (and Plex) is, and my family room where we watch TV and stream. Here's my current setup: Fios gateway is my router and Wi-Fi AP, and it does a decent enough job covering most of the house. u/RoweDent created this awesome resource on network theory u/tht1kidd_ has created a suggestion post regarding information everyone needs to provide when asking a question about their network There have been some excellent guides written in this sub, and we're always looking for more!
